What is a dystopia? Well it's the opposite of utopia.
"An imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic."

And why bother reading it?
Well, how can we know if we are living in dystopian times if we don't read dystopian literature?
Our book club will tackle some of the classic dystopian fiction of our time in order to educate ourselves well.
Here is the working list:
The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood
Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
1984, George Orwell
Short Story, The Lottery, Shirley Jackson
The Running Man, Stephen King
Station Eleven, Emily St. John Mandel
Anthem, Ayn Rand
The Hunger Games (book 1), Suzanne Collins
Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
The Giver (book 1), Lois Lowry
and maybe, What We Can Know, Ian McEwan
These should be fascinating conversations!
3rd Monday of each month, 5 - 7 pm CST, $25 / month
(with enough interest we can have this one online as well)
